Dr. Raúl Vélez-Montoya

Dr. Vélez-Montoya is a practicing retina surgeon from Mexico City and an ECFGM-certified (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) doctor. He is the coordinator of the Retina and Vitreous Fellowship Program at the Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera en México and is a professor in ophthalmology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He completed his medical training at Anáhuac University and undertook an ophthalmology residency at the Instituto Fundación Conde de Valenciana and a Retina and Vitreous Fellowship at Asociación para Prevenir la Ceguera IAP.

After his fellowship, he joined the University of Colorado’s ophthalmology department as a visiting professor and research fellow for 5 years.

Dr. Vélez-Montoya is an active clinical scientist and has authored more than 70 original peer-reviewed research manuscripts and several book chapters. His research interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal detachment, and the development of new surgical technologies. He has a special interest in furthering and promoting the appropriate treatment of endophthalmitis; he founded and serves as the chair of the Mexican Endophthalmitis Study Group, a special interest group with the sole purpose of updating current clinical and surgical guidelines regarding this topic around the world.

Dr. Vélez-Montoya is an active member of the Mexican Retina Association, where he has served as treasurer and coordinator for the annual meeting scientific committee. He is also an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology. As of 2022, he serves as Editor of the Mexican Journal of Ophthalmology.
