Prof. Xiaodong Sun is Vice President of Shanghai General Hospital, where he is in charge of science and education. He is a Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Ophthalmology and Vice President of the Shanghai Society of Ophthalmology, as well as a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Prof. Sun specializes in vitreous-retina surgery and medical retina, and his major research interests are in retina, especially age-related macular degeneration and neuroprotection. To pursue these, he has been awarded several National Grants, such as the National Science and Technology Key Grants “863” (PI) and “973” (PI) funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, as well as seven National Natural Funds of Science Grants.
Prof. Sun has authored or co-authored 165 publications in journals worldwide and was honored with the “National Labor Medal” by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions in 2017. In addition, he has been recognized by awards from numerous other bodies, including: the “Shanghai advanced worker” by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government in 2015; “Outstanding doctor” by the Chinese Society of Ophthalmology in 2010; “Talented person” by the Ministry of Personnel in 2009; and “Outstanding Youth Researcher” by the Ministry of Education in 2007.
